Want to start a business? Fall program can help

Area entrepreneurs have built their businesses from scratch, from bringing vegetarian food to hungry patrons to launching a skincare line.

What do they have in common? They learned more about launching a successful business by participating in Collab New Haven’s Accelerator program.

If you have a fledgling business, it’s your turn to participate.

Collab New Haven is now accepting applications for its Fall Accelerator, an 11-week program for entrepreneurs who want to build unique businesses and organizations.

Collab New Haven was formed in 2017 to help budding businesses, with a focus on nurturing entrepreneurship among people of color, women, LGBTQ+ and immigrants.

Caroline Smith and Margaret Lee, co-founders and co-directors, say their goal is to give participants the skills, confidence and connections they need to help their businesses grow.

Accepted entrepreneurs will participate in a series of workshops covering topics such as leadership, business planning, legal matters, accounting, marketing and more. They will also benefit from weekly individualized coaching sessions and mentorship through the Collab Mentor Network. Participants will also connect with  potential funders and have an opportunity to pitch to investors and the community.

The program will take place on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m., starting on Sept. 30 and running through Dec. 16. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the sessions will take place virtually via Zoom, so participants must have computer and internet access.

Participants have gone on to propel their businesses forward, such as Alta Mara, an environmentally friendly skin-care line, and Ms. G’s Tastys, a food truck focused on vegetarian and vegan food.

If an accepted entrepreneur needs childcare, translation services or transportation, these services can be provided.

The deadline to apply is Sunday, Sept. 6 at 11:59 p.m. An information session, which will include application tips, is planned for Aug. 25.
