Waterfront home for sale in Katharine Hepburn’s old neighborhood

A home in late actress Katharine Hepburn’s Fenwick neighborhood of Old Saybrook is on the market for $4.5 million.

Waterfront views from nearly every window can be seen from the 4,726-square-foot, two-story, European-style home at 21 Neponset Ave.

Situated on 0.55 acres, with a brick driveway, the cedar-shingle home is sited on a small rise to capture views of Long Island Sound, the two Saybrook lighthouses, Connecticut River and North Cove.

The home’s main floor features a cherry-paneled living room with a marble fireplace and bar, geared toward entertaining. The living area opens to the kitchen, featuring a wall of windows facing North Cove and more water views. A wooden staircase leads to an open balcony on the second floor, which features three bedroom suites with adjoining marble bathrooms.

The master bedroom suite has a fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows offering waterfront views and a balcony overlooking a swimming pool. The master bedroom suite also features a master bath with a Jacuzzi and center shower room.

Listed by William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty, the nine-room home, built in 1986, also has a three-car garage.

The home is currently owned by Robert and Margaret Sbriglio, of 129 Main St., Old Saybrook. The town of Old Saybrook’s most recent appraisal valued the property at $3.8 million.

Listing agent Colette Harron said in mid-August the home had been on the market for about a month, and she has had several showings.
Harron said the property is a “gem” for anyone who loves waterfront views.

One of Fenwick’s most notable neighbors was the late actress Katharine Hepburn, a lifelong resident who lived there until her death at age 96 in 2003.
Fenwick is a borough in Old Saybrook, and according to the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau, it has a population of just 44 residents. Most of the borough, situated on 195 acres, is included in the Fenwick Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Set off from Old Saybrook’s town center by a large cove over a causeway, Fenwick is located where the Connecticut River flows into Long Island Sound. It is also known for the Fenwick Golf Course, built in the 1800s. Of the two lighthouses located there — the Inner and Outer — the Outer Lighthouse is the one seen on many Connecticut license plates.

Harron said the “views from all sides” of the sprawling home at 21 Neponset Ave., are among its best attributes.

“It’s also very close to the Katharine Hepburn house and the Saybrook Lighthouse,” Harron said. “And while the home is surrounded by water views, it is not in a flood zone.”
