A mattress manufacturing facility in Windsor Locks is closing next year in a move that will lay off 157 employees, according to the company’s filings with the state.

SSB Manufacturing Company, a division of Georgia-based Serta Simmons Bedding, is permanently closing its facility at 100 D. Neil Hagen Drive, Windsor Locks, by Aug. 4, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the state Department of Labor. All 157 employees will be gone effective June 30 at the latest.

According to information from the company, Serta Simmons Bedding opened the 268,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in April 2018. The site had more than 240 employees at the time and was part of the company’s national $100 million manufacturing expansion plan.

Serta Simmons Bedding has faced some headwinds since then, though. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas on Jan. 23, according to court records.

“We are building a high-performing and resilient supply chain at SSB so we can continue delivering exceptional service to our retail partners and sleepers. As part of this, we are optimizing our manufacturing footprint which includes expanding our operations in some areas and consolidating or closing other operations," Serta Simmons Bedding said in a statement. "We are grateful for the contributions that our Windsor Locks manufacturing team has made to SSB and are committed to supporting these associates through the transition.”
