Winstanley Enterprises LLC recently leased 238,830 square feet of warehouse space at its North Maple Street facility in Enfield to Eppendorf North America Inc., a life-science company that develops and sells instruments and services for cell handling in laboratories.
Winstanley Enterprises expects to complete construction of its facility at 113 North Maple St. by this fall.
Agri-Mark, a Massachusetts-based company that distributes a wide variety of dairy products throughout the U.S., will lease a 260,500-square-foot space in the northern portion of the building.
The single-story, 500,000-square-foot distribution center across from the former Fermi High School has been the subject of controversy with some residents.
When Adam Winstanley, owner of the Concord, Massachusetts-based Winstanley Enterprises, came before the Planning and Zoning Commission in July 2020, residents of the Misty Meadows and Maple Heights neighborhoods had concerns about the scope of the project and its impact on the neighborhood.
Residents said the project does not fit in a residential area with small roads, it will cause noise in their otherwise quiet neighborhood, and increased traffic and congestion would cause problems.
More than 30 residents voiced their objections again at a Feb. 7 Town Council meeting. The council had planned to table a vote on Winstanley’s proposed tax abatement for the distribution center because officials were still discussing details with the developer.
After listening for more than two hours to residents speak against the abatement, however, the council voted to reject it.
During the meeting, Winstanley said he was promised by former Town Manager Chris Bromson that he would get 50% off taxes on the project.
