Xerox partners with California company to mass-produce ventilators

While Norwalk-based Xerox is most known for its office supplies such as copy machines, it has now joined in the fight against coronavirus by producing disposable ventilators.

Gov. Ned Lamont on Monday referenced the company’s decision among examples of how businesses statewide are pitching in to help during the pandemic.

Xerox Holdings Corp. announced Monday it is teaming up with Vortran Medical Technology of Sacramento. The collaboration will mean that more of Vortran’s GO2Vent ventilators and airway pressure monitors can get to hospitals and emergency responders, and they’ll get there faster.

John Visentin, Xerox’s vice chairman and chief executive officer, said his company wants to help make sure the medical community has the needed equipment to help these patients.

“Our smartest minds met [virtually] with Vortran’s smartest minds and figured out how to mass produce this critical technology,” Visentin said in an announcement.

The companies hope to produce some 40,000 ventilators in April, and grow this quickly, so they are producing up to 200,000 ventilators a month by June. By joining forces, the two companies anticipate producing as many as one million ventilators.

The GO2Vent isn’t designed to replace those used in intensive care units, but can be helpful in emergency situations, when patients are being transported between hospitals, and when patients no longer need ICU-grade ventilators, according to the companies.

Xerox’s manufacture and assembly of the products will take place at its facility outside of Rochester, N.Y., while Vortran will continue making them in California. Both companies will distribute the products.

Vortran co-founder and CEO Gordon A. Wong, MD said the partnership with Xerox has one goal — “to help save as many lives as possible.”
