Yale New Haven Health breaks ground on $838M neuroscience center

At the age of 12, Tyisha Walker-Meyers was diagnosed with epilepsy at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Now president of the New Haven Board of Alders, Walker-Meyers returned to the hospital campus on Wednesday to celebrate the ground-breaking of Yale New Haven Health’s new $838 million center to treat brain diseases like epilepsy.

“What it would have been like if we had an astronomical center like this here,”  Walker-Meyers said of the new center. “I appreciate this investment, not just in the hospital, but in our community,” she added, mentioning the high incidence of stroke in New Haven’s Black population. 

Walker-Meyers was one of dozens of VIPs on hand Wednesday to celebrate the ribbon-cutting, the formal start of construction on the 505,000-square-foot center. More than 400 new construction jobs will be created to build the facility, consisting of two new bed towers housing 214 new inpatient beds.

Yale New Haven Health (YNHH) CEO Christopher O’Connor said, “The physical and financial size and scope of this project reflects the health system’s commitment to the city of New Haven, to the state of Connecticut and beyond.” 

The new center also allows the health system to intensify collaboration with Yale University and its researchers on brain health. Yale University President Peter Salovey and many top school officials were on hand at Wednesday's event. 

“We will together set a new standard for clinical excellence in neurologic care that will benefit patients from across the region,” O’Connor said. 

“The project reaffirms Yale New Haven Hospital’s commitment to invest in the Saint Raphael campus,” O’Connor added, noting that YNHH took control of the historic hospital 10 years ago in a merger deal.

The new center will be named for Stephen and Denise Adams. Stephen Adams is a private equity investor with an ownership stake in an outdoor advertising company and Camping World Holdings, a retailer of recreational vehicles. 

Turner Construction of Shelton is the construction management firm on the project, with Shepley Bulfinch acting as architect. The project is being financed with Yale New Haven Health funds and philanthropic gifts, according to Stephen Carbery, YNHH vice president for facilities. 

The center will bring together patient care and research from Yale’s Medical School and science labs, Dean Dr. Nancy Brown said. 

“It enables us to bring cutting-edge therapies, diagnostics to our patients who are really the center of today,” Brown said. 

The new center also fits into the university’s goal to become a world leader in neuroscience, which includes the new Yale Center for Brain and Mind Health, announced on Tuesday.

The new YNHH neuroscience center will bring top-level resources to bear in treatment of ailments like epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spinal disorders and stroke, Yale New Haven Hospital President Dr. Keith Churchwell said. 

“What the neuroscience center will do is channel this collective expertise to deliver precise, personalized treatments to patients,” Churchwell said. “This project underscores the importance and the value of our hospital's expertise in neurological and neurosurgery and will build upon a foundation of advanced innovative care.”
