Yale New Haven Health CEO Marna Borgstrom to retire in March

Longtime CEO of the Yale New Haven Health system Marna Borgstrom announced Wednesday she plans to retire as of March 25.

The health system’s board on Wednesday chose her successor, Chris O’Connor, who is currently president of Yale New Haven Health.

“There is a time for leadership changes in every organization, and that time has come for me,” Borgstrom said.

Borgstrom has been working for the health system in various leadership roles for some 43 years.

Of her replacement, Borgstrom called O’Connor her “friend and colleague.”

“He brings enormous talent to this organization,” Borgstrom said. “He loves it and respects the people who do the work here. It is with enormous gratification and pride that I turn this over to Chris.”

O’Connor, who was born at Yale New Haven Hospital, said he is overwhelmed and humbled to be selected to take over the health system.

“I thank Marna and the board for their confidence,” O’Connor said.

Between now and March, Borgstrom will continue working to ensure a seamless transition, she said.

After her retirement, Borgstrom plans to relax and said she will likely do some nonprofit work.

Borgstrom has led the health system through the COVID-19 crisis for months. However, she said the pandemic was not related to her decision to retire.

“The pandemic, if anything, delayed this, as we didn’t want to destabilize the organization at a very delicate time,” Borgstrom said.

The health system includes Yale New Haven Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, Lawrence+Memorial Hospital in New London, Greenwich Hospital and Westerly Hospital in Rhode Island.
