The Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) and the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority are taking steps to ease the financial pain of workers impacted by the federal government shutdown.

YNHHS announced this week it would waive co-pays, deductibles or coinsurance for any furloughed government employee seeking emergency treatment in any of its emergency departments, urgent cares or walk-in clinics. The waiver extends to Northeast Medical Group offices.

Meanwhile, the Regional Water Authority (RWA) said it would waive fees and interest on overdue water bills for federal employees furloughed or working without pay during the shutdown.

“Access to high-quality water is essential for life, and we do not want furloughed workers impacted by the government shutdown to worry their water service is at stake during this uncertain time,” RWA President and CEO Larry Bingaman said in a statement.

In addition to waiving copays and deductibles, Yale New Haven said it would place outstanding bills on hold for furloughed workers and their partners, spouses or children for up to 30 days following the shutdown.

“We hope that this small measure will help patients continue to seek necessary medical care without having to choose between their health and putting food on the table,” Vincent Tammaro, executive vice president and chief financial officer for YNHHS, said in a statement.

YNHHS patients must present their federal identification at the time of service to have fees waived.

To put a bill on hold, patients at Bridgeport, Greenwich, Yale New Haven, Lawrence + Memorial and Westerly, R.I. hospitals should call 855-547-4584 and press zero. Patients of Northeast Medical Group should call 833-288-4400 and select option 4.

RWA customers who are furloughed and working without pay must provide proof of residency and proof of notice by the federal government that they are not being paid. Customers may call 203-562-4020 weekdays between 8 a.m and 6 p.m. to ask for the waiver.
