A longtime sushi restaurant in downtown New Haven has closed as the owners announced their retirement this week.

Sushi on Chapel had 16 years at 1022 Chapel St., in the Broadway area Shops at Yale in downtown New Haven.

Owner and operator Intak Choi expressed deep gratitude to his customers, adding that “It’s time for us to retire.”

Before closing, Choi helped secure a tenant for the space, and a new Korean restaurant concept will open later this year following a redesign of the space. Updates regarding the new restaurant, including an anticipated opening date, will be posted on The Shops at Yale Instagram page.

Alexandra Daum, Yale University associate vice president for New Haven affairs and university properties, said the it’s “sad to see Sushi on Chapel close, but wish Intak and his family all the best as they retire and enter this new chapter in their lives.”

The Shops at Yale includes a mix of retailers and restaurants, Apple, lululemon, J.Crew, Shake Shack, and idiom Boutique.

Last month, the university property management team announced that second-hand retailer 2nd Street USA will soon occupy space in The Shops at Yale formerly occupied by L.L. Bean.
