Noncompete clauses, which can bar an employee from working for a competitor of their employer after leaving their job, have existed in many industries for decades.

The Federal Trade Commission recently banned most U.S. employers from forcing workers to sign noncompete agreements, arguing the move will increase innovation and foster new business formation.

Also, most existing noncompetes will no longer be enforceable after the rule’s effective date.
