Three utility company subsidiaries of Avangrid Inc. — United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas — on Thursday announced the awarding of $210,000 in donations to community organizations working to ease the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Connecticut businesses and residents.

The award recipients are: the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, Bridgeport Regional Business Council, Fairfield County Community Foundation, Operation Fuel and the Valley Community Foundation.

This initial Connecticut award is part of a broader $22 million commitment by the Orange-headquartered Avangrid (NYSE: AGR) to provide coronavirus relief and recovery in the communities where its companies operate. The energy-services holding company, which operates subsidiary utilities in New England and New York, said it anticipates additional contributions in Connecticut in the future.

“As providers of essential energy services, UI, SCG and CNG are integral to the economic life in the towns and cities where we operate, and we have a special responsibility to assist our customers and communities during this difficult time,” said Avangrid CEO Tony Marone in announcing the gift. “We have targeted organizations that are well positioned to assist those in need, providing critical community services and energy assistance, as well as resources for struggling businesses.”

Avangrid and the Avangrid Foundation last month announced a $22 million commitment to coronavirus relief and recovery efforts, including $11 million in corporate contributions to local community organizations, and $11 million in foundation contributions for crisis response to organizations providing emergency response and community support during the pandemic.

Also during the emergency, Avangrid companies have suspended shut-offs for nonpayment, as well as late fees, interest and security deposits. They also recently donated some 31,000 protective masks to medical providers within their service footprint, including 6,900 surgical masks and N95 respirators to the Yale New Haven Health System.
