Two life science organizations have signed leases for New Haven’s Elm City Bioscience Center, a 113,600-square-foot, state-of-the-art lab and research building at 55 Church St.

XRPeds and the BioMed X Institute both signed five-years leases, the financial terms of which were not disclosed.

The companies will take occupancy in the facility this summer and fall, according to the New Haven-based Hurley Group, which secured the tenants.

Heidelberg, Germany-based BioMed X is a biomedical research institute that works with pharmaceutical companies in the fields of oncology, immunology, neuroscience and platform technologies.

The Elm City Bioscience Center location will be the first BioMed X Institute in the U.S. Its initial project is a collaboration with AbbVie on immunology and tissue engineering.

In January, BioMed X announced its plans to open a research facility in New Haven. The company intends to start out with a staff of six full-time positions, plus two part-time staffers for its project with AbbVie.

The new BioMed X Institute is managed by biotech entrepreneur Mark Johnston, who said the Elm City Bioscience Center “stood out to us not only because of its prime location in the heart of New Haven, but also the cooperation and flexibility they have provided to us. We are looking forward to building and growing our US presence within this vibrant life science innovation ecosystem.”

XRPeds is part of the Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics, and supports researchers, clinicians, and educators within Yale Pediatrics

Co-Director Dr. Asher Marks said XR Peds “is focused on improving the lives of youth and young adults, particularly those at risk for experiencing health disparities associated with race/ethnicity, age, gender, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, and disability.”

Hurley Group President David Goldblum said bringing XRPeds and the BioMed X Institute to the center “reinforces our commitment to providing state-of-the-art laboratory and research space for organizations focused on improving human health and advancing scientific discovery."
