CT medical group opens virtual urgent care facility in New Haven

A Connecticut-based medical group is opening its latest urgent care practice in New Haven, but with a twist: All patient-doctor interactions will be done virtually.

DOCS Medical Group held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new DOCSNow location, located at 926 Chapel St.

The location uses telehealth to expand patient access to health care, according to Dr. JD Sidana.

Similar to a normal DOCS location, patients are greeted at the front desk and given digitized paperwork to fill out before their appointment. They are then taken to a room, where they virtually meet with the provider. The provider can then perform different tests using special hardware that is controlled on the patient’s end by a medical assistant.

“As a provider I could be sitting anywhere in the country…I could listen to someone’s lungs, listen to somebody’s heart, take a look inside someone’s throat, take a look inside someone’s ears, and it’s all done in real time,” said Sidana.

The hardware, which is connected to the internet, allows both the patient and provider to see the data on both ends. The provider can collect the data and do what is needed such as provide prescriptions.

Sidana said that this method is currently used at all DOCS locations, but mostly as a backup when there are long wait times to see an in-person provider.

This new location is the first one that is exclusively virtual, and Sidana said the plan is to open in more locations where they feel access to care for patients could be improved.

“I believe this is how health care will be consumed in the future,” said Sidana.
