City of New Haven pays $7M for a motel; here’s what it plans to do with it

The city of New Haven has purchased the Super 8 motel on Foxon Boulevard for nearly $7 million, with plans to use it as a homeless shelter.

According to city land records, the city paid owner Jagdish Patel, of Minal Inc., $6.9 million for the 2-story, 58-room motel at 270 Foxon Blvd., in a deal recorded Nov. 22.

This city used a combination of federal funds along with city and state money for the purchase.

City officials said they plan to start moving people into the 18-and-older shelter this weekend. It will be the city’s largest and only non-congregate homeless shelter.

New Haven has more than half a dozen shelters listed on its website, and this facility would have more than 100 beds, giving those in need access to private or semi-private rooms and showers.

The motel was built in 1986 and has an appraised value of $2.3 million. Patel bought the property for $2.5 million in 2001, according to city records.
