CT homebuilding permits up 34% in 2019

New housing construction reached a three-year high in 2019, as the number of home-building permits issued jumped nearly 17% in December, new data shows.

There were 435 single- and multifamily permits issued last month in 104 municipalities, up from 372 permits in the year-ago period, according to the state Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), citing U.S. Census Bureau data.

The December increase helped Connecticut’s homebuilding industry finish 2019 with 5,097 new units approved, which represents a 33.7% increase from 3,812 permits issued in 2018. That marks the state’s largest number of permits issued since 2015, data shows.

Among communities sampled, New Haven recorded the largest number of permits issued last month with 199 units approved, and finished the year with 699 units issued. That’s more than double the number of units the city approved in 2018.

East Lyme was second in homebuilding permits granted last month with 48, followed by Milford and Prospect with 19 units approved, data shows.
