The food service provider for Southern Connecticut State University notified the state its contract has been discontinued, prompting its decision to eliminate 181 jobs.

However, SCSU on Tuesday indicated its new food service provider expects to hire the affected employees, including chefs, cooks and food service workers.

Chartwells Higher Education, a division of Compass Group, notified the state Department of Labor of its expected cuts in a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act letter dated July 8.

Kate Forst, human resources business partner with the company, indicated in the letter that a decision was made to discontinue Chartwells Higher Education’s food service contract at SCSU.

“Unfortunately, this decision will result in the permanent closure of Chartwells Higher Education’s entire operations at this location,” Forst wrote, in the notice.

According to Forst, SCSU notified the company on July 3 that its contract had been cancelled, prompting it to provide the WARN notice.

Mark Rozewski, executive vice president for finance and administration with SCSU, said Tuesday that Chartwells is being replaced by Sodexo.

Sodexo is headquartered in France and has a regional office in Waltham, Mass.

“The former employees of Chartwells are expected to be hired by Sodexo, for no net change in food service employment,” Rozewski said.

Compass Group USA is based in Charlotte, N.C.. Its parent company, Compass Group PLC, based in the United Kingdom, employs some 600,000 people worldwide.

Sodexo earlier this year indicated it had lost its contract with the University of Bridgeport.
