Firm relaunches with new name, new home

An architecture and engineering firm with deep roots in the region said it has moved to the Elm City from its suburban location and is relaunching under the name Roche Modern.

The firm, which says it offers cross-disciplinary design services blending architecture, engineering, sculpture and energy systems, formerly operated in Hamden as Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates.

The 70-year-old firm recently moved its 14 member team to 319 Peck St. in New Haven and will continue to offer those services “in pursuit of a modernist future,” the company said in a news release.

The relaunch is being spearheaded by Eamon Roche, son of founder Kevin Roche, who passed away in 2019, the company said. Roche became managing partner in 2018 and led the firm’s largest legacy project, the Capitol Crossing development in Washington, D.C., to completion.

“It’s an honor to carry on my father’s legacy by joining the seasoned architects who worked alongside Kevin with the next generation of talented young designers and technologies,” Roche said in a statement.

The firm was established in Michigan in 1950 as Eero Saarinen and Associates. Kevin Roche and Dinkeloo took over and moved the company to Hamden after Saarinen’s death in 1961, the company said. It rebranded as Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates five years later and completed more than 200 projects, including 38 corporate headquarters and eight museums, according to the company.

Locally, the company is best known for designing the iconic Knights of Columbus skyscraper in New Haven as well as the former Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which has been demolished.

Other high-profile projects include the Ford Foundation headquarters as well as master planning and designing the expansion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York City.

The company said it is also finishing up a multi-year project at Yale University to archive the written and drawn body of work produced by the firm.
