GalaxE.Solutions aims to participate in Hartford’s ‘revitalization’

HBJ Photo | Sean Teehan GalaxE.Solutions CEO Tim Bryan on Wednesday afternoon aired his firm's plans to expand in downtown Hartford.

At an event kicking off technology firm GalaxE.Solutions Inc.’s innovation center in downtown Hartford, the company’s chief executive likened the city to another one currently rebounding from years of decline.

“At GalaxE. we’ve also been fortunate to participate in economic revitalization in other cities. We were part of the effort in Detroit,” said Tim Bryan at a press conference Wednesday held at Upward Hartford’s coworking space in the Stilts Building at 20 Church St., where the company’s operations in Hartford will be based

“Detroit, thank goodness, is well on its way to industry revitalization and we think the same thing is happening here in Hartford,” Bryan said.

GalaxE., a Somerset, N.J.-based company, is a vendor for Bloomfield health insurer Cigna, and other health insurance companies. Its GxFource platform has been used by companies for about 30 years. It maintains offices in New Jersey, New York, Detroit, Toronto, United Kingdom, India, Belgium, Brazil, China, Ireland, Japan and Singapore, and employs about 1,500 people worldwide.

Its operations in downtown Hartford, dubbed “Outsource to Hartford,” will focus on developing and implementing technology for the insurance and healthcare payer markets.

The company plans to immediately hire about 30 people at its Hartford office, Bryan said in an interview. That number should grow to the “multi-hundreds,” within the next 18 months, declining to specify a number.

During his speech, Bryan said GalaxE.’s next generation of automation technology will be developed in Hartford.

If successful, that technology will benefit more locally based companies than Cigna, said Mark Boxer, Cigna’s global chief information officer.

“The objective is to grow it beyond Cigna,” Boxer said. “It’s about much more than Cigna, it’s about growing it within the city of Hartford, and servicing other companies in the region.”

Leaders from the city and state cast the presence of another tech firm looking to base operations and hire in Hartford as a victory for Connecticut’s capital.

“I think what (GalaxE.) sees in Hartford is what we’re trying to make sure everybody sees,” Mayor Luke Bronin said in an interview after the launch ceremony. “(Hartford) already is a city that’s got an incredible concentration of industry leaders.”

While not as large as tech giant Infosys, which is currently working toward filling some 1,000 positions in Hartford (and has hired more than 500 people statewide, including about 125 in Hartford), GalaxE.’s presence in Hartford reinforces that the city’s concentration of industries like insurance, health care and advanced manufacturing make it fertile ground for technological innovation in these sectors, Bronin said.

“For companies like GalaxE. and like Infosys that are helping companies revolutionize and make use of these incredible leaps forward in technology decide to do their work in Hartford is a significant thing,” Bronin said.
