Glastonbury housing project wins final approvals from town

COSTAR 55 Nye Road, Glastonbury

More than a year after Glastonbury officials first proposed purchasing 55 Nye Road and turning it into an affordable housing complex, the town has given final approvals for the 64-unit development.

The Glastonbury Town Council in December unanimously approved both a zone change and final development plan for a 19-building, 64-unit housing community at the 11.31-acre 55 Nye Road parcel.

About 80% of the units, 51, will be affordable, meaning they will be available to people earning 80% or less of the area median income. Twenty-eight apartments will have two bedrooms, 24 will have one bedroom, and 12 units will have three bedrooms.

Thomas Gullotta, chairman of the Glastonbury Town Council, said the 55 Nye Road project is probably the first new affordable family housing development in town since the 1980s. Another council member, Larry Niland, said the project will be “a model for affordable housing,” according to the meeting minutes.

The Nye Road saga dates back more than a year. In Oct. 2022, town officials began exploring the idea of buying 50-55 Nye Road and redeveloping it. After several hearings, town officials moved that plan forward in Dec. 2022.
