Goodwin University eyes Rocky Hill office building purchase

East Hartford’s Goodwin University is eyeing the purchase of a Rocky Hill office building to open a new early childhood literacy center.

The private school has submitted an application to the Rocky Hill Planning and Zoning Commission outlining plans to buy the former Capitol Region Education Council office building at 525 Brook St. 

It wants to use the 67,910-square-foot property to open a Goodwin University Magnet Early Childhood Literacy Center that would offer 3- and 4-year-olds a research-based literacy environment, according to the project application. 

The program would be launched in partnership with the Early Language and Literacy Initiative (ELLI), co-founded by Steppingstone Museum for Children President Rhonda Kiest and Literacy How President Margie Gillis, the application said. The program will be designed to implement evidence-based early childhood instructional practices to increase young children’s language and literacy skills and kindergarten readiness, the application said. 

Goodwin asked Rocky Hill to renew a special permit to allow educational use of the office building, which sits on 5.05 acres. The Planning and Zoning Commission granted the special permit May 18, a town official said. 

CREC formerly used the property for its Academy of Aerospace & Engineering Elementary School.

The Brook Street building has been listed for sale with a $3.15 million asking price. O,R&L Commercial is the listing broker. 

The property is owned by Connecticut real estate investor Mark Greenberg, who purchased it in 2013-2014, property records show. 

The two-story building was built in 1988.
