Greater Hartford unemployment rate slightly higher than national average

Unemployment in the Greater Hartford area improved by 5% since last year, but the region is slightly behind the national average, according to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As of July 7, unemployment in the Hartford region (including Hartford, East Hartford, West Hartford and New Britain) was 6.1%, compared to 11.1% in the same period last year, BLS reported. The national unemployment rate currently stands at 5.5%, an improvement over last year, when national unemployment was at 13%. Connecticut’s unemployment rate was 7.9% at the end of June, when the state added 3,500 jobs. 

Hartford had the highest unemployment rate with 11.5%, followed by New Britain with 9.6%, East Hartford with 8.5% and West Hartford with 4.3%.

However, Greater Hartford's average hourly wage of $31.61 is about 9% higher than the national average of $27.07.

BLS data from last year also showed Greater Hartford employees include more than 46,000 people in management. These workers earn an average hourly wage of $67.10, compared with the national average of $60.81 per hour for managers.
