Internet providers seek to capture remote work market

With many Connecticut residents working from home even as business restrictions continue to ease, internet service providers are looking for ways to tap into what’s expected to be a long-term trend.

The latest move was announced this week by Cox Business, which is promoting a new enterprise grade work-at-home offering targeted at employers worried about speed, reliability and security of their remote workers’ home internet and voice service.

The company is offering separate data and voice connections, installed in employee homes and billed to the employer.

“Wi-Fi, congestion and security issues have been a concern of many companies as more employees are having to work from home,” Steve Rowley, executive vice president of Cox Business, said in a statement. “Cox Business Work-At-Home solutions separate work and home connectivity, giving employees enterprise-grade connectivity and Wi-Fi to promote more productive employees.”

Comcast and AT&T have also rolled out comparable plans recently, telecompetitor.com reported.

Cox, which offers cable and fiber service across much of Greater Hartford, said pricing for the package starts at $145 per month.

Download/upload speed tiers range from 50/10 Mbps to 1 Gbps/35 Mbps, a spokesman said.

The work-at-home plan has McAfee and MalBlock for network security and a la carte options for virtual conferencing capabilities, Cox said. The plan also offers a static IP address, which can reduce headaches when connecting employees to company systems through a virtual private network (VPN) connection.
