The CT Port Authority of Old Saybrook announced this week the completion of the Northeast Bulkhead, also known as a delivery berth, at the port of New London.

A delivery berth is a heavy-lift platform capable of handling loads of 5,000 pounds per square foot.

The state pier project is expected to be completed later this year. Once finished, the New London State Pier Terminal will have two heavy-lift platforms.

These platforms will help with the reception of a range of cargo the facility had been unable to service in the past, including offshore wind turbine components, according to the port authority.

This puts the port on track for delivery and assembly of wind turbines for the South Fork wind project, a joint venture between Denmark-based Ørsted and Eversource. The platforms will also be used to support future Ørsted/Eversource projects Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind.

The three projects were commissioned by Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island and will generate enough output to power over one million homes.

Construction of the second platform will continue through the fall.

Ulysses Hammond, executive director of the Connecticut Port Authority, said, “The completion of the Northeast Bulkhead is a seminal milestone for the Connecticut Port Authority and substantially transforms the State Pier into a modern marine terminal, putting the

Port of New London at the forefront of the new offshore wind industry and the battle to address

climate change, while diversifying our regional economy.”

The New London State Pier Terminal is expected to play a key role in the delivery of the wind farm components due to its direct access to deep water with no overhead obstructions.

The CT Port Authority indicated the heavy-lift terminal will also be available to other commercial customers when it is not supporting offshore wind farm operations.
