KFC restaurants offer CT employees 100% paid tuition at online university

Connecticut employees of the fried chicken chain restaurant KFC can have 100% of their tuition paid if they enroll at Western Governors University.

The program is a partnership between The KFC Foundation and Western Governors University, an accredited online school.

At WGU, students advance through competency-based education, rather than by the time it takes to complete a semester, meaning students progress when they prove they’ve mastered the skills in a course.

Students can choose from more than 60 different bachelor’s, master’s and certification programs across business, information technology, education and healthcare.

Every eligible employee who applies and enrolls will get tuition coverage, starting on the first day of their employment with KFC, the organization said.

The new perk is part of a growing trend of hourly-wage workers in Connecticut gaining access to tuition assistance programs.

WGU offers rolling start dates every month, so students can enroll at any time.

“The program at WGU is perfect for someone who may not have enough hours in the day to balance a traditional college experience on top of a full- or part- time job and other life priorities,” said Emma Horn, executive director of the KFC Foundation.

Connecticut has 36 KFC restaurants.

To be eligible for the KFC Foundation program, an employee must work for a KFC restaurant participating in the KFC Foundation’s Annual Franchise Donation Program, and must maintain employment while taking the classes.
