With the holiday shopping season on the horizon, retail giant Macy’s is getting prepared with a hiring spree.

Macy’s announced Tuesday it will be hiring more than 2,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees at its Cheshire Fulfillment Center, a warehouse at 475 Knotter Dr., Cheshire.

Bridget Betances, a Macy’s media spokeswoman, said in a press release the new employees “will make all the difference behind the scenes.”

Macy’s employees at the Cheshire Fulfillment Center will be working to ensure “a timely and seamless shopping experience for customers throughout the holiday season,” Betances said, via email. “We’re currently hiring more than 2,000 colleagues at this facility to make life shine brighter for Macy’s customers.”

The retail chain needs more workers to handle merchandise, including receiving, sorting, ticketing and shipping to customers around the country. The new employees will process customer orders that have been placed online at macys.com or through Macy’s mobile app.

According to Betances, workers are needed for multiple shifts. She said the company offers a “competitive hourly income and discounts on merchandise. Employees can access health-care benefits after working there for one month, and Macy’s also offers a bonus program.

Seasonal employees are given first consideration when permanent full-time jobs open up after the holiday season. About a third of the chain’s employees in leadership positions started out at Macy’s as holiday season hires, she said.

A hiring event is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 475 Knotter Dr., Cheshire. The company welcomes walk-in applicants, and on-the-spot interviews will be conducted.

The hiring announcement comes just days after Macy’s filed a WARN, or Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act, notice with the state Department of Labor. In it, Macy’s indicated it would be laying off 78 workers in its South Windsor location due to a decision to move some operations to Ohio. The South Windsor location’s operations have focused on the chain’s “Backstage,” or affordable, fashion offerings. Those layoffs are expected to take place between November and February.
