New school in Milford teaches future rockers

School of Rock, which teaches music to aspiring rock stars, has opened its doors at 213 Cherry St., Milford.

A grand opening took place at the 3,500-square foot facility June 17, but the school has actually been rocking and rolling since March. To date, more than 70 aspiring rock n’ rollers are enrolled in the Milford school’s programs.

School of Rock alumni, Kurt Koehler, who honed his chops on guitar as a student for six years, and his sister Heidi Rogers, whose son is an alumnus of the Fairfield School of Rock, are the new owners of the Milford School of Rock.

There are seven other School of Rock franchises in Connecticut, including East Hartford, Fairfield, Madison, New Canaan, Ridgefield, Greenwich and Hartford.

Having both experienced the benefits of a music education firsthand, Koehler and Rogers are excited to bring the School of Rock to more people.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide opportunities for the community to learn and perform music in a safe, inclusive, fun and enriching environment,” Koehler said. “There is almost no better way to develop confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills than through music education and performance.”

School of Rock, which has more than 500 locations worldwide, provides students of all ages with lessons in bass, guitar, singing, drums and piano, and gives them the experience of playing in a band. Classes offered include a more advanced Rock 101 program to a Little Wing program for preschoolers and toddlers that uses classic rock songs to teach rhythm, song structure, melody and dynamics through play.

Drawing from all styles of rock and roll, School of Rock students learn theory and techniques through songs from legendary artists from Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin. Many of School of Rock’s students have gone on to secure record deals and found their way to American Idol, The Voice and even Broadway.

School of Rock CEO Rob Price was glad to welcome the Milford franchise to the rock n’ roll family.

“Heidi Rogers and Kurt Koehler are exactly the type of people we look for to lead a School of Rock franchise,” said Price. “They are passionate about their community and eager to provide opportunities for students to further their music education. I look forward to watching School of Rock Milford grow as their students thrive.”

Founded as a single school in Philadelphia, Penn., in 1998, School of Rock has grown its student count from 4,000 in 2009 to more than 55,000 students.
