A Connecticut nonprofit, DAE, has teamed up with New Haven public schools and CareerConneCT to provide students with scholarships designed to help build technology skills and more.

DAE will award 40 full scholarships, each valued at $10,600, for students to take part in its 12-month software engineering program in New Haven. The program is geared to help underrepresented youth with 21st century digital career and life skills.

DAE’s program is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, and is designed to increase mastery of technology skills. It also helps participants develop personal and interpersonal skills, officials said.

“Life is a team sport, and in order to develop the personal and collective futures we hope for, we must equip young people with the inter- and intrapersonal capabilities to form healthy and humane communities,” said A.M. Bhatt, DAE’s founder and CEO.

“We understand that to grow and succeed, all of our students' needs – social, emotional, nutritional – must be met, and, for that, we must work in partnership with city, state, and local school district stakeholders,” Bhatt added.

New Haven public schools and CareerConneCT are each funding 20 full scholarships in 2023.

Keisha Redd-Hannans, the school system’s assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and assessment, said the partnership provides students with an opportunity to acquire technology skills, particularly in website design and coding.

“Students are afforded the opportunity to work collaboratively with industry experts as they hone their skills,” Redd-Hannans said.

Gov. Ned Lamont and the Connecticut General Assembly created CareerConneCT to help state residents access and participate in training programs to earn industry-recognized credentials and find entry-level employment or further training in a high-quality career pathway. This project is being supported by federal funding the state received from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
