New Haven-area towns including North Haven, Ansonia, Shelton and Wallingford are set to benefit from $9 million in grants to upgrade housing for low- and moderate-income residents.
The state department of housing will allocate the money, drawn from the federal Community Development Block Grant Small Cities program. The grants go to municipalities with populations of fewer than 50,000 residents with the aim of reducing blight and sparking economic development.
Housing Commissioner Seila Mosquera-Bruno said, “These federal funds give us flexibility, allowing us to assist municipalities while leveraging different resources together.”
Ansonia’s $1.5 million grant will go toward modernization of the James J. O’Donnell Elderly Housing Complex, including replacement of elevators, generators, interior and exterior doors and heaters.
The Temple Pines Senior Living Complex in North Haven is the focus of that town’s $1.5 million grant, which will pay for replacements of an elevator and the fire alarm system and installation of a security camera system. In addition, units will be renovated and upgrades made to improve energy efficiency and provide emergency power throughout the complex.
Shelton’s Sinsabaugh Heights and Wallingford’s Ulbrich Heights complexes will each get $1.5 million in grants to fund renovations and modernization, including ADA code compliance.
Essex and Wesbrook also received $1.5 million grants each under the program.
Governor Ned Lamont said, “These grants go a long way toward improving neighborhoods so that we can make our communities more attractive and encourage continued growth for the benefit of all our residents.”
