Woodbridge-based P2 Science won the top prize in an innovation contest sponsored by a German firm, the company announced Thursday.

The Yale-linked green chemistry company won first place in the environment category at the BSB awards, run by Germany’s Beratungs- und Servicebüro.

P2 Science won for its Citropol line of cosmetic ingredients, alternatives to petrochemical derivatives that went on the global market in April 2020. The ingredients, derived from forest products, are renewable and biodegradable and used in both skincare and haircare preparations.

BSB Founder Jan Riedel said the awards are designed “to promote the global dissemination of up-to-date knowledge,” according to a statement.

The BSB prize is the third industry award P2 Sciences has won in the last month, according to a statement. P2 also won “best breakthrough supplier” in the innovation category at the BeautyMatter NEXT awards and first place at the C&T Allé Award in the “base ingredient” category.

P2 Science was co-founded by Professor Paul Anastas, head of the Yale Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, and Patrick Foley.

The company opened a manufacturing plant in Naugatuck in 2018, where it is using vegetable oil to create the building blocks of cosmetics and fragrances as well as a variety of industrial polymers. BASF and Chanel are among P2 Science’s investors.
