New Haven mainstay Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana is expanding southward, signing a lease on a new location in Alexandria, Virginia, according to local reports.

The Washington Business Journal reported that the coal-fired chain would take over the space of a former Baja Fresh in the Alexandria Commons plaza. The pizzeria is still in the early planning stages with no schedule set for opening.

“The Pepe’s family always looks forward to exploring opportunities in different markets and to sharing the Pepe's experience by bringing New Haven pizza to this area,” the company told the publication.

Another Pepe’s pizzeria, in Bethesda, Maryland, is set to open this winter, according to Bethesda Magazine. Both new restaurants are in affluent suburbs of Washington, D.C.

With 12 locations in the Northeast, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana has expanded far beyond its Wooster Square roots. Pepe’s pizzerias in Connecticut now operate in Fairfield, Danbury, Manchester, Waterbury, Ledyard and West Hartford, plus Warwick, R.I., and the Massachusetts towns of Chestnut Hill, Burlington and Watertown.

Wooster Square rival Sally’s Apizza has launched its own expansion in recent months, with a location planned in the Hartford area and a new Stamford pizzeria set to open on Oct. 7.
