Pierce Lab appoints new lab director, board president

The John B. Pierce Laboratory, a nonprofit, independent research institute affiliated with Yale University, recently named a new laboratory director and the first female president of its board of directors.

Dr. John Geibel, who has served on the laboratory’s board, is its new director. Geibel is professor emeritus of surgery and cellular and molecular physiology at Yale University School of Medicine. 

Margaret Penny Mason, who has served on the board for several years, is its new president. Mason, an attorney, has worked for the firm Barclay Damon for years, handling matters involving complex litigation, medical-malpractice defense and employment law.

Board Director Anthony P. Scillia said both bring their “years of professional excellence” to their new roles at Pierce.

“We are thrilled to welcome our first woman board president,” Scillia said.

The Pierce Laboratory was founded in 1933, and it offers an environment for interaction and collaboration among scientists within the laboratory and in the surrounding Yale community.

SCSU Foundation board elects trio of business professionals

Three area business professionals – all alumni of Southern Connecticut State University -- were recently elected to the SCSU Foundation Board of Directors.

Louis Gianquinto, Jodi Euerle Eddy and Jocelynne Rainey were chosen by the board to serve three-year terms.

Board members provide fiduciary and governance oversight over the assets and operations of the SCSU Foundation, which manages and administers philanthropic gifts. It also provides scholarships and financial aid for students.  

Gianquinto serves as president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s commercial health plan in Connecticut. Eddy is senior vice president and chief information and digital officer for Boston Scientific. Jocelynne Rainey serves as president and CEO of Getting Out and Staying Out, where she oversees programming that has helped more than 10,000 young men access education, achieve emotional well-being and secure meaningful employment.

The SCSU Foundation Board also recently re-elected:

Chris Borajkiewicz, a personal wealth advisor at Root, Borajkiewicz, Lucarelli Wealth Advisors.

Lindy Gold, a senior development specialist in the state Department of Economic and Community Development, where she is responsible for business retention, recruitment and expansion.

Mike Katz, a retiree who formerly served as an educator, coach, professional football player, professional bodybuilder and gym executive.

David Vance, a retiree who joined the SCSU Foundation as a part-time executive director in 2011, and transitioned to the role of financial consultant in 2017. He previously served as vice president for finance and controls for the University of Connecticut Foundation, and is a former controller at Wesleyan University.

The panel also recently voted to name William H. Pratt as an emeriti member of the board. He is a partner in the law firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner of Washington, D.C.
