An area visiting nurses association, VNA South Central Connecticut, is becoming part of the Yale New Haven Health System.

The non-profit VNA, which provides home care services, will be known going forward as Home Care Plus – South Central Connecticut.

The Yale New Haven Health System, which includes Yale New Haven, Bridgeport, Greenwich, Lawrence + Memorial and Westerly hospitals, makes over 25,000 referrals to home care services each year, with over half of those in the greater New Haven area.

According to the health system, the integration will enhance its ability to provide home care services to people throughout the Greater New Haven, Milford and Valley regions.

When asked about the terms of the deal, Mark D'Antonio, a spokesman for the health system, said it was not a financial transaction.

"Since this was a merger, not an acquisition, we did not pay for VNASCC," D'Antonio said. "No money changed hands."

Kathleen O’Leary, vice president, post-acute care services for the health system, said in an announcement that its hospitals and medical offices rely on home care services to help patients who need additional assistance while recovering from an injury or illness at home.

“Given VNA South Central’s commitment to patient-centric care, the integration strengthens our own commitment to the health of people in our communities,” O’Leary said.

According to O’Leary, the system’s hospitals have experienced a high demand for emergency care and inpatient services, so they needed a plan to better manage patients who can be safely cared for in their homes.

“Most of our patients would rather be in their homes instead of a hospital,” O’Leary said. “This integration of services is a natural fit for both organizations.”

About 100 people who work for the VNA will become health system employees.

In 2019, the VNA made approximately 100,000 home visits and brought in around $10 million in revenue.

Samantha DiCicco, CEO, executive director/administrator for VNA South Central Connecticut, said the VNA is “proud” to extend its home care services through Yale New Haven Health’s network of care.
