Report: Greater Hartford hourly wages 19% higher vs. nation

Greater Hartford workers earned far more per hour compared to the rest of the nation in May 2017, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A report released Wednesday by the bureau says area workers earned an average of $28.87 per hour in May 2017, or about 19 percent more than nationwide hourly wages ($24.34).

Hourly wages in Greater Hartford were higher in 18 of the top 22 occupational groups, including healthcare practitioners and technical; community and social service; and education, training, and library.

The largest percent wage increases in Greater Hartford vs. the national average were in farming, fishing and forestry (28 percent higher); building and grounds maintenance (22 percent); and community and social social service (both 19 percent). Wages were only lower in Greater Hartford’s legal sector (3 percent decrease).

Wages were also higher in production and health care (18 percent higher), and education, personal care and service and office and administrative support (16 percent).

The report draws from the Occupational Employment Statistics survey, a federal-state cooperative program. The estimates are built on responses from about 1.2 million establishments.
