Canidae Pet Food, a Stamford-based maker of premium dog and cat foods, announced last week that it would soon roll out “kibble refill stations” in Petco stores nationwide.
The refill stations will dispense the brand’s dog chow into reusable zipper bags with the goal of eliminating 50,000 single-use bags.
Food from the dispensers will cost 45% per pound less than prepackaged versions, the company said in a statement. A customer buying 4 pounds at a kibble refill station will save about $9 when compared to buying a bag of the same weight.
A 4-pound bag of Canidae Sustain dog food costs $17.99 as a one-time purchase on the Petco website.
Two flavors of kibble will be available at the dispensers: Canidae’s Pure Real Salmon & Sweet Potato and Sustain Premium Recipe with Cage-Free Chicken.
The system, modeled on dispensers of bulk human-food items like coffee beans, was tested at Petco locations in Southern California and is set to expand to 100 stores nationwide, according to Canidae.
The elimination of single-use bags also allows Canidae to “mitigate supply chain constraints related to packaging,” the company said.
Headquartered in Stamford, Canidae makes its pet food in Brownwood, Tex.
