United Illuminating (UI) was reporting 52,031 of its customers were still without power as of Friday morning due to damage from Tuesday’s Tropical Storm Isaias.

The Orange-based utility serves 17 towns and cities throughout the New Haven region.

UI leaders were anticipating some customers would still be without power throughout this weekend, but it anticipated full restoration by the end of Monday.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said as of Friday morning, just over 5,000 city households were still without power.

“We are working hard to get everyone back online after the storm,” Elicker said. “Over the past three days, we have reduced the number of households without power in half and will continue to work with United Illuminating and city departments to get this done.”

According to the mayor’s office, the city’s parks and public works departments have cleared over 140 streets, with more to go.

Residents can call the New Haven Emergency Operations Center at (203) 946-8221 if they need ice for medication, or to report an emergency such as a fallen tree, or downed power lines.

Eversource, meanwhile, which provides electricity to customers through much of the state, indicated that as of 9:15 a.m. Friday morning, there were approximately 414,000 customers without service. Eversource estimated it would make significant progress by the end of the weekend, with restoration substantially complete by Tuesday night.

Gov. Ned Lamont announced the state has received a presidential emergency declaration due to the storm damage. Initially, about 700,000 residents were without power. The declaration means the state can request direct federal assistance to supplement ongoing state and local efforts.
