The Yale New Haven Health System will train a new cohort of personal care associates and personal care technicians thanks to a $10 million federal grant through the state Department of Labor (DOL).

Over four years, the grant is expected to pay for classroom learning and on-the-job training for at least 1,250 people as part of a new program with the Yale New Haven Health System. The grant will be administered through the DOL Office of Apprenticeship Training.

Yale New Haven Hospital President Dr. Keith Churchwell said, “The apprenticeship program participants will be full-time employees receiving pay and benefits. both of which are essential in helping them get reestablished following pandemic-related job loss or the need for career transition.”

The program is aimed at nurses aides and other unlicensed members of a care team at nursing homes or hospitals who are seeking new jobs or career advancement. They will be paid $15.50 an hour during the year-long apprenticeship and will get additional training in safety and medical procedures, allowing them to qualify for better-paying jobs.

“This new apprenticeship program represents another step towards training the next generation of workers up the healthcare career ladder,” said DOL Interim Commissioner Danté Bartolomeo.  “These new apprentices will graduate ready to provide high-quality healthcare for patients and fill critical jobs in the state.”
