New Haven-based Artizan Biosciences Inc. recently appointed Dr. Bridget Martell to serve as the company’s new president and CEO.
Martell succeeds James Rosen in the role.
Martell has an extensive background in the industry, and played a role in the success of medicines such as Kadcyla, Elelyso, Intermezzo and Ogivri. She has had several leadership roles during her career, including for Kura Oncology and Juniper Pharmaceuticals. She started her pharmaceutical career at Pfizer.
Martell was a practicing physician at Yale for 20 years and remains active as an entrepreneur in residence at the university’s Office of Cooperative Research.
Artizan Board of Directors Chairperson Christy Shaffer said Martell has a “proven track record of developing promising science into therapeutic products that improve patient lives.”
The company is developing treatments aimed at stopping microbial-driven dysregulation and inflammation, which play a role in multiple serious diseases. It is preparing to enter the clinic with its lead program in inflammatory bowel disease.

Liberty Bank names new head of retail lending
Matthew Cammarota has been hired as the new senior vice president and head of retail lending at Middletown-based Liberty Bank.
Cammarota has some 25 years of experience in community banking, most recently at Webster Bank.
David W. Glidden, president and CEO, said of Cammarota, “In recruiting Matt to join the Liberty team, we quickly learned what others have known about him for a longtime — he’s a respected and admired industry leader when it comes to all aspects of retail lending.”
Cammarota currently serves as chairperson of the Consumer Bankers Association’s Home Equity Committee and as a board member, vice chair and volunteer with Columbus House in New Haven.
