CT housing permits halved in May

Construction permits to build new homes and multifamily housing in Connecticut fell by half in May compared to a year ago, their largest year-over-year decline of 2021 so far.

There were 329 permits issued during the recent month, down from 661 in May 2020, as a steep drop in the number of permitted multifamily units erased a modest uptick in permits for single-family homes, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The May decline comes on the heels of a 72% increase in permit activity in April, and smaller declines in the preceding three months.

From January to May, building departments in Connecticut issued 2,139 permits, down 13% from the same period in 2020, led by a decline in multifamily permitting.

The statewide permit numbers are Census estimates based on reports from 104 Connecticut municipalities. The state Department of Economic and Community Development releases permit data each month reflecting only the 104 cities and towns that submit permit information.

DECD said those municipalities issued 257 permits in May, down from 535 a year prior.
