State Sen. John Fonfara has joined a crowded race for mayor of the capital city.
Fonfara, (D-Hartford), said Monday he planned to run for the seat, which will be left vacant following Mayor Luke Bronin’s second and last term, according to the Hartford Courant.
Fonfara is the fourth Democrat to announce his candidacy, along with former state Sen. Eric Coleman, Councilman Nick Lebron and Hartford Land Bank CEO Arunan Arulampalam.
“What’s driving me to this is the mayor’s job is direct, hands on, every day with 400 people behind you — hopefully all rowing in the same direction to make Hartford better,’' Fonfara told The Courant in an interview. “Unfortunately, the neighborhoods of Hartford struggle in some places with extreme poverty, lack of opportunity. ... Could I stay on as the state senator? Could I stay on as the chairman of the finance committee? Yeah. But I feel that I have this opportunity to transform our city. The goal and the objective is to provide opportunities to those families that are here.’'
Fonfara, who was recently re-elected to the General Assembly, told the Courant he does not need to step down because he is not up for re-election until 2024.
A Democratic primary will take place in September.
