Danbury-based FuelCell Energy, which is focused on green power generation, has launched a new fuel cell platform.

The company is now accepting orders for its solid oxide electrolyzer and solid oxide fuel cell platform, it announced this week.

The modular platform is geared toward the low-cost production of clean hydrogen and power, according to the company, which designs, manufactures, installs, operates and maintains fuel cell power plants.

FuelCell Energy’s clients range from utilities to universities, hospitals, manufacturers and municipalities.

According to the company, the new platform has multiple benefits, such as providing continuous power, reducing grid dependence and helping customers be hydrogen-ready as the energy transition unfolds.

FuelCell Energy plans to expand its manufacturing activity in Connecticut in anticipation of increased demand for production.

The new platform is the result of more than 20 years of development and testing for applications including hydrogen electrolysis, long-duration hydrogen energy storage and power generation. The FuelCell Energy solid oxide electrolyzer produces hydrogen efficiently, requiring less electricity, according to the company.

Tony Leo, chief technology officer and executive vice president with the company, said it has been developing and testing solid oxide technology with support from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The goal, according to Leo, is to provide low-cost hydrogen and power whenever and wherever it is needed.

“We believe solid oxide presents the best opportunities for hydrogen production facilities to minimize the overall cost while maximizing efficiency,” Leo said.

FuelCell Energy’s solid oxide fuel cell can operate on fuels such as hydrogen, natural gas and renewable biogas.

Trinity College, a FuelCell Energy molten carbonate fuel cell customer, is the first organization to purchase FuelCell Energy’s 250kW solid oxide fuel cell power generation system, according to the announcement. Power and heat produced from the platform will be used at Trinity’s Hartford campus to lower energy costs and help ensure energy reliability.
