A recently completed fuel-cell plant on the Trinity College campus in Hartford has changed ownership hands.

Danbury-based FuelCell Energy said Thursday that it sold the 1.4-megawatt plant, which was completed in May, to AEP OnSite Partners, a subsidiary of Ohio-based electric utility American Electric Power.

The purchase price for the plant, located near the Ferris Athletic Center, was not disclosed.

FuelCell Energy will operate and maintain the plant under a 15-year service contract with AEP, which said the plant is the first fuel-cell project in its portfolio.

The plant will generate both electricity and steam heat, allowing Trinity to reduce its use of boilers and its carbon dioxide emissions by 4,100 tons annually compared to the national grid, and will also eliminate 8 tons of nitrogen oxide and 10 tons of sulfur dioxide, the school said.
