Mohegan, Foxwoods’ April slot revenues down 12%

Slot revenues at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino continued to plummet in April, falling about 12 percent at both tribally operated casinos.

For the month, Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE) on Wednesday posted slot revenues of $45.2 million, down about 12 percent from the $51.3 million in the year-ago period.

The amount slot bettors wagered last month, known as the “handle,” was $565.6 million, also down 9.6 percent vs. $625.8 million in April 2018.

Mohegan, which is legally required to contribute 25 percent of its slot revenues to Connecticut, said it provided $11.3 million to the state’s general fund in April.

Foxwoods on Wednesday also said its slot revenues declined in April to $36.2 million, down 12.1 percent compared to $41.2 million a year earlier.

The handle in April was $431 million, also down 14.4 percent from the $503.7 million wagered in the same month in 2018.

Foxwoods said it contributed $9 million to the state last month.

Slot revenues have plunged at both Mohegan and Foxwoods for 10 consecutive months since Aug. 2018, when MGM Resorts International opened its new Springfield casino.

The Connecticut casinos are working to recoup lost gaming revenues from MGM and other gaming operators in the region through a jointly run $300 million casino in East Windsor. The complex will be known as Tribal Winds Casino.
