Upscale retailer Patagonia announced this week that it will close its store at 1 Broadway in downtown New Haven.
“We’re sad to share that Aug. 21 will be our last day of business,” the company said in a post on Instagram. “Thank you, New Haven, for letting us be a part of the neighborhood the last few years.”
The chain, known for its pricey eco-friendly outdoor wear, will keep open its store in Westport, its only other Connecticut location.
The New Haven Patagonia, at the intersection of York and Broadway, was originally operated by an independent retailer who licensed the store from Patagonia, said David DelVecchio, director of real estate asset management for Yale University Properties. The chain took over operations upon the licensee’s retirement.
“Although the store had increasingly successful sales year after year, the layout and size did not fit Patagonia’s traditional retail format,” DelVecchio said.
Patagonia has been a linchpin in the high-end retail district along Broadway that includes J. Press, L.L. Bean and Blue Mercury cosmetics. Warby Parker eyewear was the most recent retailer to lease in the area, opening a store at 268 York St. in December 2021.
Yale bought the 1915-vintage building that houses Patagonia in 1994, paying $1.3 million for the property, according to city records. The 5,538-square-foot structure was most recently appraised at $1.7 million in 2021.
As part of former Vice President for New Haven and State Affairs Bruce Alexander’s retail strategy, Yale leased the corner storefront in 1994 to coffee chain Au Bon Pain, which operated in the space until 2013.
A clothing boutique leased for a brief period after that, followed by a popup exhibit run by the Yale Peabody Museum. Prior to Yale’s purchase, the space had been home for decades to nightlife spot Demery’s.
DelVecchio had no comment on prospective tenants or leasing plans for the 1 Broadway corner storefront as of press time.
