Hartford nonprofit seeking employers to hire 200 students

Hartford nonprofit Community Renewal Team (CRT) is seeking businesses in the city to hire some 200 students in its annual summer youth employment program.

CRT, in partnership with Hartford's Capital Workforce Partners (CWP), a jobs-training organization serving the north-central Connecticut region, is asking employers of all sizes to participate in the five-week program that connects students ages 15 to 21 to paid jobs.

The program is aimed at developing a student’s job readiness, and leadership and decision-making skills.

A grant provided by CWP, the city of Hartford, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and the state, will cover costs for employers.

CRT will administer the payroll of students in the program and maintain their workers' compensation coverage. It will also provide a case manager who meets with employers at least twice a week during the summer.

According to CRT, students will work between 24 hours to 40 hours a week, or a maximum of 120 hours per participant during the five-week program running from July to August.

The nonprofit said it’s seeking employers from several in-demand industries including health care, manufacturing, construction, engineering, information technology and retail. It’s also asking nonprofit organizations and schools to participate.

While most of the program’s participants will return to school in the fall, many others will pursue a college education or enter the workforce, CRT said. Employers may also decide to hire their youth workers after the program ends.

Businesses are required to confirm their interest in participating by June 30.

A job fair for participants enrolled in the program is scheduled for July 8 at CRT’s Hartford headquarters at 555 Windsor St.
